Previously, levamisole was used as an anti-rheumatic therapy for patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the 1970s and 1980s.
Because of its immunomodulatory effects, the drug has been studied for the treatment of various immune-mediated diseases, with some studies showing positive results. The drug is also used in combination with other drugs to treat various cancers.
What is levamisole used for?
Levamisole is a veterinary drug used primarily to treat worm infections in domestic animals. Levamisole injectable is an anti-helminthic drug.
The drugs used to treat parasites in goats fall into three categories.
1.Benzimidazoles-Fenbendazole, Albendazole, Oxybendazole, Thiabendazole
2.Nicotinics – Levamisole, Pyrantel, Moratel
3.MacrolyticLactones-“avermectins” Ivermectin, Doramectin, Moxidectin
Benzimidazoles (Safeguard®, Panacur®, Valbazen®, Synanthic®), also known as "white dewormers", are broad-spectrum and safe to use. They are effective against tapeworms.
Levamisole injection is used for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematode infections.Albendazole is effective against adult liver flukes, but should not be used in pregnant or lactating women.
Levamisole (Tramisol®), also known as a "clearing dewormer", is broad-spectrum and effective against prey larvae. Levamisole injectable can be used as a wormer for goats.
Pyrantel (Strongid®) is only effective against adults and Moratel (Rumatel®) is an oral feed additive that is only effective against adults.
Abamectin (Ivomec®, Dectomax®, Quest®, Cydectin®) are the newest drugs in the family. They are broad-spectrum and have a wide margin of safety. They are also effective against external (biting) parasites, including nose robots.
Ivomec, Valbazen and Tramisol drench are approved for use in sheep. Only fenbendazole and Rumatel are approved by the FDA for use in goats.
The use of any product that does not conform to its label constitutes "off-label" drug use and requires a veterinary prescription and a valid veterinary-patient-client relationship.
Keep the medicine at room temperature in an airtight jar, away from sunlight, moisture and visible light. Prevent the freezer from freezing. Keep away from the control of children. Do not hold medication that has expired or is no longer needed.
