Factors And Solutions for the Drop in Egg Production

Apr. 09, 2022

It is obvious that poultry farming is becoming so popular in different parts of the world. It's a promising agribusiness, but poultry farmers must equip themselves with the right poultry farming information to optimize their production. I want you to know that poultry farming is a bit tricky. Poultry farmers face many challenges, but disease outbreaks are the scariest problem.

Sometimes everything is fine, but you may observe that your bird's daily egg production is decreasing. This is a very serious problem and should not be taken lightly as it can affect profits.

Normally, a healthy hen starts laying at 18-22 weeks of age and the egg production of such a hen should peak after 6-8 weeks. If this expected egg production peak changes drastically, then there must be a reason. This article will discuss the various factors that can cause a drop or decrease in egg production and possible fixes or solutions.

Causes of egg production in poultry production

1. Stress and change

These two are one of the main reasons for declining egg production. Most laying hens are usually affected by sudden changes in their daily pattern, e.g. changes in the position of enclosures or nesting boxes usually throw the hens out of balance and thus reduce egg production. Therefore, poultry farmers should avoid handling or moving their poultry immediately after the start of egg production.

2. Removing roosters or introducing new birds into the flock

If you introduce a brand new chicken into your flock or remove a rooster from a particular flock, you are actually giving the hens the impression that their breeder is doing something (a kind of coup). So you should avoid this as much as possible.

3. Overcrowding, weather changes, feed composition and feeding times

Expect to produce fewer eggs when you overstock, when the weather changes or the composition of your feed changes or when you feed your laying hens for the time you normally do. Poultry farmers should be aware of drastic changes in temperature, such as overheated or overcooled conditions in enclosures or nesting boxes. In such cases, the bedding lining of the bedding should be changed daily. Likewise, avoid sudden changes in the timing of feeding the hens and avoid unnecessary changes in their feed composition.

4. Noise and lighting reduction

Birds are always frightened by noise or the sight of predators. Obviously, hens do not want any other form of noise except the loud characteristic gobble they make when they are about to lay eggs. In addition, reducing lighting time can have a detrimental effect on a hen's perceived day length. Scientifically speaking, egg production is influenced by the amount of daylight exposure. This means that increased light will stimulate egg production. Hens should enjoy sufficient light for at least 14-16 hours.

5. Poor or unbalanced diet

A poor diet can have a negative impact on egg production. Hens need energy, protein and a diet rich in calcium. Don't let your hens' diet be deficient in these three nutrients. In addition, they should be provided with a balanced diet. You can also add egg production boosters to the drinking water. These boosters contain the minerals and amino acids needed for the egg-laying period.
