What is Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin (trade names: Amoxil®, Amoxi-Tabs®, Amoxi-Drop®, Bimox®, Moxatag®, Novamoxin®) is an aminopenicillin antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. It is most commonly used to treat skin, respiratory and urinary tract infections.

 

Its use in cats and dogs for the treatment of certain bacterial infections and at certain doses, as well as in ferrets, birds and reptiles, is "off-label" or "extra-label". Many drugs are often prescribed for off-label use by veterinarians. In these cases, please follow the veterinarian's instructions and warnings very carefully, as they may differ significantly from those on the label.

 

How is amoxicillin administered?

Amoxicillin is given orally as a tablet, capsule, or liquid suspension. It may be taken with or without food; however, if vomiting occurs while taking it on an empty stomach, take it with food at a later date. Take the drug for the entire prescribed time unless otherwise directed. Carefully measure the liquid form and shake well before administering.

 

This medication will take effect rapidly within approximately 1 to 2 hours. Although the effects may not be apparent from the surface, gradual improvement usually occurs over a few days.

What if I miss a dose of my pet's medication?

If you miss a dose, give it when you remember, but if it is close to the next dose, skip the dose you missed and give it at the next scheduled time and return to the regular dosing schedule. Never give your pet two doses or extra doses at a time.

 

Is any monitoring of this medication required?

No specific monitoring is required when your pet is taking this medication. Your veterinarian may monitor your pet to make sure the medication is effective.

 

How do I store amoxicillin?

Capsules, tablets, and powders should be stored at room temperature between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C) in airtight containers and protected from moisture. Liquid Amoxicillin suspensions are best stored in the refrigerator, although not required.14 Discard the unused liquid portion after 14 days.

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction, call your veterinarian's office immediately. If they are not available, follow their instructions to contact an emergency facility.

 

Are there any potential side effects?

Common side effects include gastrointestinal reactions such as loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Serious side effects include allergic reactions characterized by rash, fever, facial swelling or difficulty breathing, incoordination when walking or chronic lack of appetite (in cats).

 

This short-acting medication should be discontinued within 24 hours, although effects in pets with liver or kidney disease may be longer.

 

Are there any risk factors associated with this medication?

Amoxicillin should not be used in pets that are allergic to it or other penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Do not use in rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, or other small mammals. Do not give orally to pets with bloodstream infections, shock, or other serious illnesses or it may not be effective. Although it may be safe to use this medication, use with caution in pets that are pregnant or nursing.
