Why are Antiparasitic Drugs Used in Veterinary Medicine?
The health of animals, companions and farm animals is important to their lives and the lives of humans. Living together in a limited space can easily spread diseases and parasites.
There are many drugs specifically developed for veterinary medicine and the prevention of pathogens. Also, feed additives and antibiotics are often used for faster growth and resistance compared to simple bacteria-borne diseases.
As applied to human drugs, guidelines also apply for the development, testing and release of veterinary drugs to ensure safe use and harmlessness. These regulations are often controlled, new (lower) acceptable levels of residues are applied, and the widespread use of antibiotics or hormones has been gradually reduced.
There are no major differences in the appearance of the different development steps for human and veterinary drugs. The overall strategy is somewhat similar: in addition to the classical small molecules, biopharmaceuticals are now in development and have been used for a variety of purposes. And, some relatively older developed drugs that are no longer used for human purposes are still in use because their effectiveness has been demonstrated in veterinary medicine.
Antiparasitic agents are also widely used to eliminate parasites from the digestive tract of animals.
How do antiparasitic drugs work?
Antiparasitic drugs target infected parasites by destroying or inhibiting their growth; they are usually effective against a limited number of parasites in a given class.
How do antiparasitic drugs work in dogs?
Many antiparasitics containing ivermectin are used to prevent heartworm, tapeworm, lice, worm and mange mites, and ear mites in dogs. Ivermectin works by disrupting the neurological processes of the parasite. This neurological action may cause serious side effects in some dogs.
Can Ivermectin be given to cats?
Ivermectin is most commonly used as a heartworm preventative in dogs and cats for the treatment of ear mites and feline mange. Many drugs are often prescribed for off-label use by veterinarians.
Is ivermectin a wormer for dogs?
Ivermectin is generally a safe and effective dewormer for dogs and is often used at low doses as a heartworm preventative and at higher doses to treat diseases such as mange. However, some dogs carry a genetic mutation (MDR1) that makes them more susceptible to the toxicity of higher doses of this common drug.
