Overview of oxytetracycline injection veterinary uses
Oxytetracycline injection is an antibiotic medication used exclusively for veterinary purposes. It is used for the treatment of Clostridium difficile wound infections, respiratory and urinary tract infections, and skin inflammation. The active chemical present in the drug has a molecular formula of C22H24N2O9, a molar mass of 460.434 g/mol, and an elimination half-life of 6 to 8 hours. It is most often administered intramuscularly and is perfectly suited for use in cows and bulls. Oxytetracycline injection belongs to the tetracycline class of antibiotics and is highly regarded for its superior efficiency and reliability.
Oxytetracycline Injection for dogs and cats
● Oxytetracycline is used in dogs and cats to treat bacterial infections, including sinus respiratory infections, wound infections, pneumonia, oral infections, and hemophagocytic infections.
● Tetracycline is considered the drug of choice for the treatment of hemocytic and tick-borne infections in dogs, such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and feline infectious anemia (hemopathiosis). However, the most common first choice for these infections is doxycycline.
● Doxycycline is also used to treat protozoal infections (single-celled organisms) in animals.
● It is also used to treat conjunctivitis, especially in cats.
● Doxycycline oxytetracycline is not effective against infections caused by parasites (intestinal worms), mites, viruses or fungi.
Precautions and side effects with oxytetracycline injection
● Although usually safe and effective when prescribed by a veterinarian, hygromycin can cause side effects in some animals.
● Oxytetracycline should not be used in animals with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to the drug. Caution should be used in pets with liver or kidney (renal) disease.
● At high doses, oxytetracycline may reduce appetite and cause gastrointestinal problems.
● Oxytetracycline may interact with other medications. Consult your veterinarian to determine if other medications your pet is receiving will interact with hyoscine. Such medications include oral antacids.
● The most common concern people have with tetracycline is that it can affect bone and tooth development in children. Oxytetracycline and other tetracyclines can discolor the teeth of young animals. Do not give the drug until adult teeth have fully erupted.
● High doses of hygromycin can cause kidney damage.
● Pregnant animals should avoid hygromycin because of the possibility of liver problems.
