How Much Do You Know about Amoxicillin Clavulanate?

Feb. 07, 2021

When it comes to amoxicillin, I believe we are all too familiar with it because it is too common in our daily lives, but how much do we all know about amoxicillin clavulanate

Amoxicillin, one of the most commonly used semi-synthetic penicillin broad-spectrum β-lactam antibiotics, is a white powder with a half-life of about 61.3 minutes. It is stable under acidic conditions and has a 90% absorption rate in the gastrointestinal tract. It has strong bactericidal effect and strong ability to penetrate cell membranes, and is also one of the more widely used semi-synthetic penicillins in clinical applications, and its preparations include capsules, granules, tablets and injections, etc. It is now often used in combination with clavulanic acid and sulbactam to make injections.

1. Amoxicillin and amoxicillin sodium clavulanate potassium is the same kind of drugs?

The answer is: of course not! Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic, but it is susceptible to destruction by beta-lactamases produced by bacteria while exerting its therapeutic effect, so its efficacy can be reduced. So, amoxicillin sodium clavulanate potassium was born. Although the antibacterial activity of clavulanate potassium itself is weak, but it is a powerful umbrella for amoxicillin, under its protection amoxicillin from the pain of being broken down by β-lactamase, so the antibacterial activity is greatly improved!

2. Is amoxicillin clavulanate potassium the same?

The answer is: of course not! Amoxicillin clavulanate potassium is a compound preparation of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid potassium, but its preparation has a variety of different ratios, at present, the common ratios of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid in China are 2:1, 4:1, 5:1, 7:1, 8:1, 10:1, 14:1, the ratios of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid produced by different manufacturers may be different, and the clinical usage and dosage are also different. Therefore, it is important to read the drug instructions carefully and strictly follow the doctor's instructions when using them, and not to exchange them at will.

This product has bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of clinically important bacteria found in large and small animals. In vitro the product is active against a wide range of bacteria, including strains resistant to amoxicillin alone because of beta-lactamase production.

By either intramuscular or subcutaneous injection in dogs and cats, and by intramuscular injection only in cattle and pigs, at a dosage rate of 8.75 mg/kg bodyweight (1 ml / 20 kg bodyweight) daily for 3-5 days.

The product should not be administered to rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters or gerbils.  Caution is advised in its use in other very small herbivores.
